My studio is located on Waiheke Island in New Zealand.The  atmosphere and light that surrounds
me are my inspiration.
 
Katie was born in 1965 in New York. She began her professional career as a fine arts painter after graduating in 1988 from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
Katie’s light filled studio is now located on Waiheke Island. She and her Kiwi husband Darren relocated to New Zealand in 2010 from Nantucket Island.
Waiheke is the perfect place for Katie to continue her practice with a focus on colour and light. Citrus trees surround her studio. Light filters in through the day creating unique opportunities to explore composition. She gravitates toward painting larger than life forms, as they are able to draw the viewer into the work.
Her palette is based on impressionism with multiple layers of oil paint mixed and applied in a way that creates a colour resonance. On close inspection one can see these layers. Objects often take on an anthropomorphic look as they lean into and relate to one another on the canvas.
Her recent work also includes landscapes from Nantucket and New Zealand.
‘My landscape pallet is very similar to my signature still life works with an emphasis on capturing the atmosphere and feeling of the scene. I am drawn to places that I have been familiar to me for many years. As I paint these places, I am brought back to them. I can actually feel the texture of the grasses ,sands and water as I paint.’
Her work had been recognized and collected internationally. She continues to exhibit in the USA as well New Zealand.
